Shetland Isles - Be at one with nature

The Shetland Isles are located in northern waters between Scotland (110miles) and Norway (190miles) and can be reached by ferry from Aberdeen with a journey time of around twelve hours.

These islands are unspoilt with an extraordinary landscape ranging from mountainous cliff faces, lush green fields, beautiful beaches and hidden rocky bays.

Lerwick, although the largest settlement on the Shetlands, is still small but offers a range of independent restaurants, shops and hotels, a picturesque waterfront and a hilltop fort overlooking the island of Bressay which is well worth a visit.

Within Lerwick there are several lively bars on the main road through the town and some of the hotels open their bars to non residence.

A supermarket is located on the main road between Lerwick and the port; I would recommend obtaining items for a packet lunch if you intend to venture off the beaten track to explore inland or one of the islands - many of the smaller islands have nothing other than small convenience shops with limited opening hours .

Public transport is excellent and from the bus station in Lerwick, a range of (long distance) destinations can be reached at very reasonable prices.

A very well run ferry service connects the outer lying islands with 'the mainland' and upon arrival at your destination you will find 'the terminal' consisting of a waiting room and WC. There are no power sockets for charging mobile phones in these buildings and with the islands being so under populated ensure you bring a spare power pack.

If you are looking for peace, calmness, beautiful scenery and have close contact with nature, this is the destination for you.
