Piraeus

A short train journey away from neighbouring Athens with its excellent rail network to the main airport, Piraeus is the gateway to the many islands off the Greek coast.

Many ferries which are no longer required by northern European operators are often cascaded down and purchased by companies operating in the Mediterranean to see out their twilight years. Some dating from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's can still be found either in operation or long term lay-up giving an eclectic look to the Port of Piraeus; quite a spectacle for those enthusiasts among us! As the ships berth stern first within the harbour with very little space between them, there are some good photo opportunities available.
