Genoa was a 'pit stop' for me whilst I waited for my ferry to depart, having arrived on the 6hr northbound ferry from Bastia and prior to departing on the 10hr southbound ferry to Olbia. As such, I stayed in the cheapest and closest 'hotel' to the port. You get what you pay for........ Having said that, the room was clean, had washing facilities and a coffee machine and if you need to leave early in the morning the staff member (who stays at the hotel) will wake up and let you out at a pre-arranged time; the hotel doors are locked at night....... If staying in the same area (close to the port) do not have a room overlooking the port owing to traffic noise which is relentless!
The Port of Genoa is HUGE and not the easiest place to navigate. There is a coffee shop on the upper floor of the ferry terminal but also an array of eateries in the shopping centre next door. As a pedestrian you initially walk along a covered walkway from the terminal before descending down the stairs to the vehicle lanes before boarding the ferry via the vehicle deck, There is no segregation between vehicles and foot passengers therefore, have eyes in the back of your head and make a run for it!
Even if you are not a ship enthusiast it is well worth venturing up onto deck as you arrive/leave Genoa as the adjacent ships are brightly decorated in Looney Tunes and super hero characters.
