The ferry terminal in Gdansk is a fair way from the city centre, although the local public bus does stop nearby. The destination of the bus is Westerplatte, also the location of the WW2 memorial. The journey time for this bus is around 40min and does go through some rather unnerving areas. The ferry terminal is a grey, cold, unforgiving building with a vending machine for hot beverages. NOTE, don't arrive there too early as it is not the best place to wait around. You can however, board around 2hrs before departure and go straight to your cabin. Access to the ship is via a long covered walkway from the terminal and once aboard, there are alot of stairs to climb before you enter the passenger accommodation (vessel on the route at the time was Wawel, see blog).
